The Sundial Path winds through the historical center of the town of Pennabilli. The seven sundials, which reproduce famous paintings, decorate the façades of buildings along the way.
Some of the reproductions are faithful to the original, others recall it through a significant detail. Visitors may observe the San Sebastiano (St. Sebastian) by Antonello da Messina, in which the gnomon (the little bar that casts the shadow) is a metal arrow among the other painted arrows, as well as Andrea Mantegna's putti, which decorate the Camera degli Sposi of the Palazzo Ducale in Mantua, and were inspired by works of contemporary artists such as Rabuzin, Giulio Turci, Tullio Pericoli, and Tonino Guerra himself.
The Sundial Path ends at the Orto dei Frutti Dimenticati (Garden of Forgotten Fruits), where the roof of the Lavatoio (Wash-house) hosts the most remarkable of the seven sundials: the large Meridiana Orizzontale (Horizontal Sundial), on which the time of day is indicated by the visitor's shadow.
These installations were created with the cooperation of sundial experts such as Giovanni Paltrinieri, who was in charge of the gnomonics, as well as a group of artists including Marco Bravura, Giò Urbinati, and Mario Amaldi, the latter of whom painted the sundials and took care of the project's technical side.
Tonino Guerra did not intend the seven sundials to be mere pictures, but rather an homage to time and the ancient tools used to calculate the time of day and the seasons. In their role as manifestation of the past, they are intended to be an invitation to look back and an aid in finding the natural sign of time in a world that seems to be out of touch with it.
